Orthopaedic Orthodontics

This treatment is mainly reserved for children but in some circumstances, a fantastic option even for adults. It allows for the growth of the bones in the jaws and face to allow for all the adult teeth to come through normally.

This treatment has been invaluable to our patients and practice because:

  • We do not extract adult teeth for orthodontic treatment
  • We improve airways (Nasal breathing)
  • Reduce future incidence of sleep apnoea
  • Treat and avoid causing temporomandibular disorders (TMD) such as clicking, lock jaw, migraines and vertigo.

What does Orthopaedic orthodontics involve?

There are usually 2 stages

  1. Orthopaedic appliance stage:
    1. This involves an appliance which is either removable or fixed in the mouth. This slowly expands and painlessly encourages the growth of the upper and/or lower jaw.
    2. Usually treatment lasts between 6-12 months.
    3. The dentists reviews your progress with monthly appointments
  2. Orthodontic stage:
    1. Once all expansion has occurred, tooth alignment with orthodontic brackets may be required.
    2. This can usually be completed between 6-12 months
    3. The dentists reviews your progress with monthly appointments
